Failure to understand and respond befittingly to the measure cultural values of patients can have a variety of adverse medical institution consequences: reduced status in pre-emptive screenings, delayed immunizations, wide histories, use of harmful remedies, non-compliance, and decreased gratification with care to name a few. A primary challenge in working with patients from different ethnic backgrounds is being able to use cultural generalizations appropriately without losing sight of the individual patient/family. To succeed in this challenge, clinicians must keep in mind that variations occur between ethnical subgroups fair as individuals subscribe to chemical group norms to varied degrees.
